About this gun slip
A gun slip is the piece that carries the gun between cabinet, car and hide, so it takes more handling than anything else in a shooting kit. It has to slide on easily when your hands are cold, protect the stock from knocks in a crowded vehicle, and stay out of the way once you are on the peg.
Load the gun barrels first so the stock stays at the open end where you can reach it, stand the slip against a wall instead of laying it on wet ground, and give the gun a wipe before it goes back in after a damp day.
Materials and care
The leather is the working surface of this piece: firm enough to hold its shape, supple enough to fold into a car boot, and it takes on a deeper colour the longer it is used.
Wipe it with a soft dry cloth after a wet outing, let it dry slowly away from radiators, and treat the leather lightly once or twice a season.
